Prog Rock
Prog Rock, or progressive rock, emerged in the late 60s, driven by a new ambition: to push the boundaries of traditional rock songs. Here, the tracks lengthen, structures become complex, and musicians explore sounds from jazz, classical, or electronic music.
Founding bands like Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson defined the genre with essential concept albums. In the 70s, Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull brought prog rock to its peak, offering immersive works where each vinyl tells a complete story.
Today, the movement continues with bands like Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson, who perpetuate the spirit of experimentation. These vinyl records offer an immersion into a rich and abundant sound universe, where listening becomes a total experience, balancing instrumental virtuosity and psychedelic journeys.

Progressive rock on vinyl: when music pushes beyond all boundaries
The golden age of prog: From psychedelic roots to sonic cathedrals
Born in the late 1960s from the ashes of psychedelia, progressive rock, or 'prog', redefined the boundaries of rock by infusing it with structures borrowed from classical music, jazz, and world traditions. Driven by boundless ambition, this predominantly British movement gave rise to concept albums, epic twenty-minute suites, and iconic sleeve art. From the early rumblings of King Crimson to the symphonic frescoes of Yes, prog embodied a quest for complexity and virtuosity that finds its truest home in the vinyl format.
The albums that built the prog legend
It's impossible to discuss prog without tipping a hat to In the Court of the Crimson King (1969), the founding act by King Crimson, or Close to the Edge (1972) by Yes, a pinnacle of technical prowess laced with orchestral filigree. The Gabriel-era Genesis trilogy, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, transformed rock into oneiric theatre, while Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon (1973) propelled the genre into another dimension, more accessible yet no less ambitious. Among the outsiders, Emerson Lake & Palmer electrified Mussorgsky on Pictures at an Exhibition, Jethro Tull invented folk-prog with Thick as a Brick, and the Canterbury scene (Caravan, Soft Machine, Gong) cultivated a jazz-inflected whimsy. Nor should we forget the Continent: French outfit Magma invented Zeuhl on Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh, while Germany's ECM label hosted the explorations of Terje Rypdal.
For the collector, hunting down prog pressings is an adventure in itself. First runs on historic labels, the Vertigo swirl, the green Harvest design, the Charisma 'Mad Hatter', are prized for their vintage warmth and the hot-stamped matrices in the dead wax. Modern reissues (Steven Wilson remixes, half-speed masters from Abbey Road) deliver a newfound clarity that does justice to these dense productions. Before buying, compare editions: a 1970s Japanese pressing of a Camel classic and a 180g reissue cut from the original tapes each tell a different story. By weighing up offers from multiple record dealers on the same album, whether an original Selling England or a coloured vinyl reissue, Vinyles.com helps you track down the edition that matches your quest, at the fairest price.
