New soundtracks on vinyl: what you will find here

This page gathers new soundtrack vinyl releases tracked on Vinyles.com: film, TV and video game music, from brand-new releases to reissues of classic scores. You will find reference composers such as Bernard Herrmann, Angelo Badalamenti and Thomas Newman alongside current names like Lorne Balfe and Marco Beltrami. For each record you can compare offers from several partner stores.

A soundtrack on vinyl often stands out as an object: gatefold jacket, new artwork, colored vinyl echoing the film, and notes from the composer or director. The format suits sweeping orchestral scores as well as electronic music and song compilations, and many soundtracks are pressed as double LPs to give each side room to breathe.

Score, song soundtrack or expanded edition: read the jacket

Before buying, check exactly what you are getting. An "original score" contains the music composed for the film. A "soundtrack" may mean the songs heard on screen, sometimes padded with tracks "inspired by" the film that never appear in it. "Deluxe" or "expanded" editions add cues missing from the first release. Two records with the same title can therefore have very different contents, so the track list is worth a close look.

Original score: music composed for the work
Soundtrack: songs from the film, sometimes inspired-by tracks
Expanded or deluxe: extra unreleased cues
Anniversary: reissue, sometimes with new mastering

Following soundtrack releases and specialist labels

The vinyl edition of a soundtrack often arrives after the film or series, sometimes months later, because of pressing times. Several labels specialize in carefully made editions: Mondo and Waxwork Records for film, especially horror and genre cinema, Milan Records and Lakeshore Records for current film music, Invada Records, and Laced Records and iam8bit for video games.

These editions are often limited, with several color variants, some of them exclusive to a single store. Pre-ordering remains the surest way to get a specific variant. Anniversary reissues of cult films and games are also a chance to find a long out-of-print score on vinyl again, sometimes in a more complete version than the original release.

Comparing prices on a new soundtrack

The price of the same soundtrack varies with the edition, vinyl color, number of discs and store. Always compare the same version: a limited color double LP is not priced like a standard black pressing. On Vinyles.com, each record page groups offers from partner stores, so you can quickly find the best deal on a new soundtrack release and see whether an edition is still available or already sold out.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a score and a soundtrack?

A score is the original music composed for a film, series or game. A soundtrack more broadly means the audio of the film, often the songs heard on screen. Some records combine both, so the track list on the back of the jacket tells you what you are buying.

Why does the vinyl soundtrack come out after the film?

Pressing vinyl takes weeks or even months, and designing a well-made edition with new artwork and notes takes time too. The digital soundtrack often arrives with the film, while the vinyl edition follows later, sometimes through a specialist label that licenses the music.

Do video game soundtracks come out on vinyl?

Yes, more and more. Labels such as Laced Records and iam8bit specialize in these editions, often double LPs with original artwork. As with film scores, they are frequently pressed in limited quantities and sold through pre-orders, with color variants that sell out quickly.

Should I pre-order a soundtrack on vinyl?

Yes if you want a color variant or limited edition, which often sells out fast. For a standard edition, waiting until release lets you compare prices. Keep in mind that an announced release date can slip because of pressing delays.
