New release or reissue? Reading a vinyl listing

A "new" vinyl record isn't always new music. Many releases are reissues, sometimes for an anniversary, sometimes just a repress of a sold-out title. And one album can come in several versions: standard black vinyl, color variants, a deluxe edition with bonus tracks, a box set. The music is often identical; the object, run size and price differ. The barcode is the surest way to identify one exact edition.

On quality, weight alone isn't a guarantee: a 180-gram record is mainly stiffer, while the sound depends first on the mastering and the source. Established reissue labels such as Music On Vinyl usually spell those details out. Picture discs put looks first and tend to be noisier on the turntable.

How to keep up with the latest vinyl releases

Albums come out worldwide on Fridays, but vinyl sometimes trails CD and digital because pressing can take months. Pre-orders often open the day an album is announced, and that's when the most limited variants go. Record Store Day in the spring, plus its Black Friday edition, brings exclusive records in small quantities at participating stores. Following the labels behind your favorite genres is the best way to catch new music on vinyl before it's gone.

Comparing prices on new records

The price of the same new record can vary noticeably between stores and between versions. Here you can compare offers from several partner stores for each record, then click through to the one you choose. For a standard edition there's no rush, since prices can shift after release. For a limited variant or a numbered box set, reserving early is safer because those editions are rarely made again. Check the format as well: a double LP costs more but gives the music more room.
