Alternative
Exploring the fringes of rock, pop, and folk, alternative records bring together free, offbeat, and unclassifiable sounds. Here, there's no formatting or ready-made formulas: artists invent their own rules, with raw guitars, DIY experiments, poetic or radical lyrics, and unique atmospheres.
You'll find worlds that are both intimate and noisy, fragile and explosive, capable of surprising you with every track. This musical territory embodies uncompromising creativity, where authenticity takes precedence over the pursuit of a hit song.
These vinyl records appeal to the curious, enthusiasts of sound exploration, and those who enjoy being surprised by new emotions. Each record then becomes an experience in itself, a journey off the beaten path that awakens sensibility and nourishes the imagination.

Alternative Rock Vinyl: Indie, Grunge and Post-Punk Records to Compare
What you'll find among these alternative records
This alternative rock vinyl section covers music that grew up outside the major-label system: indie rock, grunge, post-punk, punk / hardcore, gothic, industrial / post-industrial and experimental music. Indie rock makes up most of the catalog, from 1980s and 1990s classics to current acts such as Mitski, Editors, TV Priest and King Gizzard. Vinyl suits this music well, since many of these albums first came out on independent labels that kept pressing LPs, with artwork and inserts designed for the format.
Each record page gathers offers from several partner stores, so you can compare a standard black pressing, a color variant and an anniversary reissue of the same album side by side, and see which one is worth the price. That comparison matters most for cult albums that get reissued every few years.
Original pressing or reissue: buying alternative vinyl records
First pressings on the labels that built the scene, including 4AD, Sub Pop, SST, Dischord, Matador, Merge and Rough Trade, are sought after and mostly change hands used. For listening, a recent reissue is often enough, as long as you know the source: a remaster cut from the analog tapes and one cut from a digital file will not sound the same. Several of these labels reissue their own back catalog, and Music On Vinyl has reissued many rock albums from the 1980s and 1990s.
- the stated master source (analog tapes or digital)
- label and country of pressing on the center label
- disc and sleeve grading for used copies
- whether a color or limited edition is a store exclusive
- single or double LP for longer albums
Essential alternative albums on vinyl
Post-punk laid the groundwork with Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures" (1979) and the early records of The Cure, before The Smiths released "The Queen Is Dead" (1986). In the US, R.E.M.'s "Murmur" (1983) and Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation" (1988) set the template for college and indie rock. 1989 brought both "Doolittle" by Pixies on 4AD and "Bleach", the Sub Pop debut by Nirvana, two years before "Nevermind" (1991) took alternative rock mainstream.
The 1990s added Pavement's "Slanted and Enchanted" (1992), Nine Inch Nails' "The Downward Spiral" (1994) and Radiohead's "OK Computer" (1997), while the band Fugazi embodied the hardcore ethic of Dischord. More recently, Arcade Fire's "Funeral" on Merge and the albums of Mitski show that the indie scene still keeps record bins full.
