Two years after the release of the highly acclaimed Crash Recoil, Anthony Child, aka Surgeon, returns to Tresor with his new album, Shell-Wave. Retaining the minimal hardware and studio-concert-set approach of the previous album in order to focus on the work itself, Shell-Wave is a deeply personal testament to Surgeon's life and journey, blending three decades of experience with a constant curiosity for the unknown. While the creative philosophy of Crash Recoil is largely present, the process and instruments have evolved, with Child once again changing his approach to studio work. This insistence on trying new techniques does not preclude a return to older ones, such as using modern digital machines alongside live and concrete recordings, inspired as much by 1960s producer Joe Meek and 1970s reggae as by this year's synthesizer exhibitions. This "time travel" philosophy is inherent in the music itself: synchronized loops repeat while delay and effects branch out, forming unique whirlpools; distinct quantum moments within a circular whole; the future seeping between the sounds.
