Description

Based in New York, Canadian Julia Kent made a name for herself in the 90s with the cello-rock group Rasputina and has since showcased her talents as a cellist with Antony and the Johnsons (the only constant member of the band since their beginnings, along with Antony Hegarty). She has also played and produced arrangements on numerous albums and created 2 solo albums: Delay (2007) and Green and Grey (2011). Character, because for Julia Kent, we are all characters, actors in our lives, whose fiction we sometimes control, but rarely the consequences. An introspective, contemplative, and at times cinematic album. Julia offers a strong emotional range and unique creativity on Character, recorded alone in her home studio using numerous layered, multiplied, and textured recordings. She incorporates and retouches sounds: a striking match, the clinking of wine glasses, a pencil gliding on paper, an old out-of-tune autoharp. Sampling accidents then become the most beautiful ambiances, sonic backdrops for undeniable virtuosity, so that the cello (in various guises) always returns to center stage, the main character.
