Kids Table

Description

Sitting at the kids’ table, going to prom, trying a new antidepressant… These small, everyday scenes, as absurd as they are revealing, adorn the cover of Bright Eyes’ new EP, *Kids Table*. Following in the footsteps of *Five Dice, All Threes* (2024) but with its own identity, the record oscillates between an optimistic irony and a disarming despair, true to the chiaroscuro that has always defined the band's music. Born during the same sessions at Omaha's ARC Studios as the previous album, these tracks didn't find their place within its cohesion. Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, and Nate Walcott chose to bring them together here, offering a new perspective on their universe. Alynda Segarra (Hurray For The Riff Raff) features on two tracks, there’s a ska reinterpretation with "1st World Blues," and lyrics peppered with literary and pop culture references, from Salman Rushdie to Shakespeare. But the heart of the project lies elsewhere, in the cover of Lucinda Williams’ "Sharp Cutting Wings." It was the first song Oberst wanted to sing after his vocal issues in 2024, a spontaneous and emotionally charged performance. Added at the last minute, it sealed the EP, bringing a fragile light amidst the shadows and connecting these disparate songs with a common thread of hope.
