Afro-Cuban Vinyl Records: Son, Mambo, Rumba and Latin Jazz LPs

What you'll find among these Afro-Cuban vinyl records

This collection gathers Afro-Cuban vinyl records, part of the World music section: son, rumba, mambo, cha-cha-chá, Afro-Cuban jazz and current bands carrying those traditions forward. The music is built on interlocking percussion, horns and call-and-response vocals, and the great mambo and Latin jazz records were made in the golden age of the LP, between Havana and New York. For American listeners, much of this history played out in New York ballrooms and studios. For each record, you can compare offers from partner stores.

Essential Afro-Cuban artists and albums

In the 1940s and 50s, Arsenio Rodríguez modernized Cuban son, Pérez Prado made the world dance to the mambo, and Machito and his Afro-Cubans, with Mario Bauzá, created Afro-Cuban jazz in New York. Conga player Chano Pozo joined Dizzy Gillespie, with whom he wrote "Manteca". Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaría, Cachao and Celia Cruz carried the tradition on, leading to the New York salsa of the Fania label.

In Cuba, Chucho Valdés's Irakere fused jazz, funk and Afro-Cuban rhythm in the 1970s. In 1997, the "Buena Vista Social Club" album brought Compay Segundo, Omara Portuondo and Ibrahim Ferrer to a worldwide audience. Today, bands like Orquesta Akokán keep the big-band sound alive, and new recordings in this style keep coming out on vinyl.

Originals, reissues and compilations: buying Afro-Cuban vinyl

Original Cuban pressings, issued by the state label EGREM and its Areito imprint, are scarce outside Cuba and vary widely in condition, so study the photos and description before buying used. First US pressings of 1950s mambo and Latin jazz are also sought after. For listening on a budget, reissues and compilations are a great way in, as long as you check the credits: some anthologies mix period recordings with later re-recordings.

Afro-Cuban, salsa, Latin jazz: where does the genre end?

The borders are loose. New York salsa of the 1960s and 70s grew out of Afro-Cuban rhythm; Latin jazz came straight from meetings between Cuban musicians and American jazz players; even Santana's Latin rock owes a lot to this tradition, since "Oye Como Va" is a Tito Puente composition.
