Buena Vista Social Club at Carnegie Hall

Description

Sixteen songs on a double album (sumptuously presented, including a richly illustrated booklet) to extend the pleasure, but for one night, and one night only. On July 1, 1998, singers Omara Portuondo and Ibrahim Ferrer, guitarists and singers Compay Segundo and Eliades Ochoa, pianist Rubén Gonzáles, double bassist Orlando Cachaito López, and many others, took to the stage of Carnegie Hall in New York, at the instigation of Cooder senior and junior (Ry as the guitarist father, and his son Joachim on drums and percussion). It was the first time the Cubans had set foot on US soil. Those who will never forgive themselves for missing the concert (it was sold out anyway) were thus offered a sophisticated and elegant consolation prize. The cross-referenced repertoires of the original album (recorded in the studio two years earlier) and Wim Wenders' film soundtrack reveal only two new songs: the delightful "Almendra" (almond) by Abelardito Valdés, and "La Engañadora," a violin composition.
