Avant-garde on vinyl: on the frontiers of sound
Origins and revolutions: When music breaks the rules
Avant-garde music isn't a genre, it's a stance: the refusal to accept established frameworks in order to invent new forms of listening. Its roots stretch back to the early 20th century with Erik Satie and his 'furniture music', Edgard Varèse dreaming of 'spatial' music, and Charles Ives' experiments across the Atlantic. After the war, everything accelerated: Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry laid the foundations of musique concrète in Paris using cut-up and manipulated magnetic tape, while in Cologne, Karlheinz Stockhausen shaped pure electronic music at the WDR studio. In the 1960s, free jazz blew swing apart with Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler and Sun Ra, as La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich and Philip Glass imposed a hypnotic minimalism. Each current pushed the walls of the possible a little further, and vinyl was its direct witness.
Cult records: the albums that redefined listening
You can't discuss the avant-garde without citing a few now-mythical milestones. Ornette Coleman's 'Free Jazz' (1961) invented the collective free breath; Terry Riley's 'In C' (1968) installed an infinite pulse that mesmerises; Steve Reich's 'Music for 18 Musicians' (1978) is a masterpiece of rhythmic precision and tonal colour. In Europe, Can delivered the hallucinatory krautrock trip 'Tago Mago' (1971), while This Heat shaped 'Deceit' (1981), a work of experimental post-punk with prophetic darkness. On the concrète side, Pierre Henry's 'Messe pour le temps présent' (1967) remains a fascinating entry point. And Glenn Branca's 'The Ascension' (1981) reinvented the electric guitar as a devastating orchestral mass. These records aren't just listened to, they're inhabited.
Collecting the avant-garde: pressings, labels and advice
For the collector, avant-garde vinyl forms a territory as exciting as it is demanding. Historic labels like ECM (for European jazz and minimalism), Tzadik (John Zorn's laboratory), Mego and Crammed Discs have often produced pressings with meticulous attention to detail. An original German ECM pressing of 'Music for 18 Musicians', or a first pressing of Klaus Schulze's 'Irrlicht' on Ohr, are sought-after treasures. Recent reissues on Superior Viaduct, Modern Love or Erased Tapes offer a quality alternative for more modest budgets. Comparing prices across different selling platforms, which is precisely what Vinyles.com allows by aggregating offers from partner merchants, quickly becomes essential to track down the right edition at the right price without spending hours on it.
