The leader of the Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet, an internationally recognized group, reveals a more intimate and personal side in his solo project. Solo, the new album by Wojtek Mazolewski, offers an intimate, cinematic, and deeply atmospheric listening experience. One might expect a solo album to be an opportunity for displays of virtuosity, but Mazolewski takes a different path: he presents the double bass as a melodic instrument, played with remarkable sensitivity and tenderness, thus revealing the richness and depth of its sound. Solo is a surprising record. Despite its subtle arrangements – harp, flute, percussion, delicate electronics, and whispered vocals – the music captivates from the very first notes. With a modern spirit, it sometimes surprises with a gentle, danceable pulse. Mazolewski creates a space conducive to concentration and reflection without falling into new age clichés. The sound quality of the album is also remarkable, the result of the work of producers Wojtek Mazolewski and Wojtek Urbanski, and the mastering done by Grammy Award-winning sound engineer Ben Rawlins. The contributions, though occasional, but essential, of the exceptional harpist Marysia Osu also deserve to be highlighted. Mazolewski will perform alongside Marysia Osu as a guest at the London Jazz Festival in November.
