"Aufheben" is a German verb with multiple meanings. It can mean to lift, transcend, abolish, or even sublet. It is also a philosophical term used by Hegel to explain the moment when a thesis and antithesis interact. This album was recorded in Berlin at Anton Newcombe's new studio, as well as at "Studio East," a studio belonging to a famous former East German radio station. Matt Hollywood, a member of the original lineup, returns for the recording, accompanied by Will Carruthers (Spacemen 3, Spiritualized), Constantine Karlis (Dimmer), and Thibault Pesenti (Rockandys). Eliza Karmasalo also sings in Finnish on some tracks. In this album, BJM's sound blends with Eastern influences, as well as everything crazy we've seen in the last forty years, to be up-to-date. The Brian Jonestown Massacre has been a significant influence on many bands (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Warlocks, The Black Angels, The Dilettantes...) despite all the incarnations it has undergone since its birth in 1992 in San Francisco.
