"Natural Brown Prom Queen" is an epic and personal record, addressing race, femininity, and fiercely loyal love relationships at the heart of Sudan's life with her family, friends, and partner.
When Sudan burst onto the scene in 2017 with "Come Meh Way", she was a violinist and producing beats in her bedroom. While her first album Athena drew inspiration from divine black feminine power, on "Natural Brown Prom Queen", Sudan is in the character of Britt, the girl next door from Cincinnati who rolls into town with the top down and shows up to her high school prom in a pink fur bikini with her thong peeking out from her denim skirt.
"Natural Brown Prom Queen" is Sudan's most ambitious work to date, with 18 tracks and nearly an hour of music. As it should be for an album named after a homecoming event, "Natural Brown Prom Queen" is entirely dedicated to home: both Sudan's adopted city, L.A., and Cincinnati, where she grew up. It's an intimate album in every sense of the word, with Sudan unafraid to be vulnerable, tender, and open about her insecurities. But the record also speaks to the pursuit of pleasure - after all, this is the artist who played the violin upside down on a pole in a music video.
