Athena is the debut album by violinist, singer, songwriter, and producer Sudan Archives. It follows her self-titled first EP (2017) and the EP 'Sink' (2018), which received widespread critical acclaim from NPR Music, The Guardian, Pitchfork, and The New York Times, among others. Athena addresses the theme of duality. Having an identical twin, Sudan Archives has long understood the notion of coexistence of opposites within a single entity. She explores this concept throughout the album, testing the boundaries between good and evil, vulnerability and strength. For Athena, Sudan Archives worked with a group of musicians including producers Washed Out, Paul White (Danny Brown, Charli XCX), and Rodaidh McDonald (The xx, Sampha, Adele). This openness to collaboration has given Sudan Archives her most varied music to date; as she puts it, the EPs are "a haiku of what the album is." Athena is a psychedelic and magnetic vision of modern R&B that is unlike anything else. A gem.
