Monster is R.E.M.'s ninth album, released in 1994 at the height of the band's success following the acclaimed albums 'Out of Time' (1991) and 'Automatic For The People' (1992). Coming after a long hiatus from touring (the band had not toured for the two previous albums), Monster presents an intentional shift in R.E.M.'s sound, a 'return to rock' with prominent guitars and simple arrangements.
The album features the singles 'What's The Frequency, Kenneth?,' 'Crush with Eyeliner,' 'Bang and Blame,' and 'Strange Currencies.' The 25th anniversary reissues include the original remastered album, a new mix by Scott Litt, demos, and a 1995 Chicago concert, inviting listeners to rediscover Monster in a completely new light.
