Gramophonie

Description

With "Gramophonie," musician and sampling master Nicolas Repac explores the jazz of the Roaring Twenties, 20 years after his classic Swing Swing! To mark its 20th anniversary, label Nø Førmat! asked this early collaborator to dive back into the simultaneously old-fashioned and modernist imagination of Roaring Twenties jazz, adding a volume to his cycle of soundscapes (Black Box, Rhapsodic) by imagining a kind of sequel to his album Swing Swing, released in 2004. Repac uses his samples with virtuosity and poetry, creating musical confidences in the form of waking dreams. While Gramophonie retains the mischievous and surreal spirit, notably in intoxicating tracks like "Harlem," "Scatastrophes," and "Swingphony," Nicolas Repac does not limit himself to a simple reinterpretation of the past. The rhythmically intoxicating pieces also blend with piano, and hybrid, hazy, and deliberately cinematic samples. This album offers a poetic and enigmatic musical experience, ideal for fans of electronic music and jazz. "Gramophonie, or the great imaginary orchestra of a sample of spirit."
