« Wandering ». The English verb evokes the act of moving aimlessly, without a clear purpose, without an apparent plan. The choice of this title might surprise coming from Enrico Pieranunzi, a musician in full maturity, who has found his personal path. It is, however, perfectly suited to this new recording which tells us very precisely about the musical approach of the pianist: to make his singular voice heard, perfectly identifiable, whether starting from a composition on which he improvises or relying on his intuition of the moment and the security of his playing to improvise freely. Many of those who closely follow Enrico Pieranunzi's career (more than forty albums as a leader in thirty years) have seen one of the most exciting contemporary artists emerge and one of the best jazz pianists in the world. All the steps he has taken outline a continuity that « Wandering » restores: roots - the blues, here « Teensblues » and the angular accents of Thelonious Monk's theme - to free improvisation - the different sections of « Improstinato » and « Improvisions ». Through the multiple facets that make up each of his pieces, « Wandering » restores a portrait of Enrico Pieranunzi. Thanks to a magnificent pianistic mastery, an extensive dynamic range, and the breadth of his sound palette, the artist manages not to repeat himself while remaining himself at every moment.
