Loveinamist

Description

Loveinamist, Marianne's second pop album for Decca and her last album of the 1960s, has been remastered from the original tapes by Grammy-nominated Andrew Batt, who also provided detailed liner notes that Marianne contributed to before her passing in January 2025. Released in March 1967, Loveinamist is a hybrid composed of previous hits Yesterday and This Little Bird, tracks from her only American album Faithfull Forever released seven months earlier, and new recordings in the folk-pop style that defined her signature sound. The album features a series of impressive interpretations of the songwriters that suited her best, including Counting by Bob Lind, Reason To Believe by Tim Hardin, the beautiful folk-pop ballad With You In Mind by Jackie DeShannon, and the baroque psychedelia of In The Night Time by Donovan. The lyrics, music, and ideas of Donovan seemed particularly well-matched to Marianne's interpretive talents, and another of his compositions, Young Girl Blues, receives a powerful treatment in stark contrast to the rest of the album's folk romanticism. Loveinamist also reflects Marianne's penchant for French music, with beautiful renditions of Ne Me Quitte Pas, from the musical Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1964), and Coquillages, the French translation of Cockleshells, by Marianne, which originally appeared on the album North Country Maid. Although it would be almost ten years before she released another album, Loveinamist represents a new phase of creative achievement for Marianne and includes some of her best pop performances of the 1960s.
