As soon as the music plays, the fiery guitars and defiant vocals recreate that unique effervescence that made English pop vibrate during its golden age.

Britpop vinyl records: what this section covers

This page gathers Britpop vinyl, the movement that dominated English guitar pop in the mid-1990s with big singalong choruses and lyrics rooted in everyday British life. Britpop drew on The Beatles, The Kinks and The Smiths, and was partly a reaction to American grunge. The catalog brings together the genre's leading bands, such as Oasis, Pulp and Supergrass, forerunners starting with The Stone Roses, and artists who carried the legacy into the 2000s, from The Libertines to Miles Kane. For American listeners who know Oasis mainly through "Wonderwall", this section is a good way to explore the wider scene around it.

Original pressings or reissues?

One key point for collectors: in the mid-1990s the CD ruled the market. Britpop albums did come out on vinyl, but in smaller quantities, which makes some original pressings scarce and expensive today. For listening, reissues are usually the sensible choice, especially anniversary editions, which are sometimes remastered, expanded with B-sides or offered on colored vinyl.

Before buying, check whether it is an original pressing or a reissue, whether the edition is single or double LP, and what it includes beyond the album itself: B-sides, demos, a booklet. With sought-after used originals, it is worth asking for the exact condition of the vinyl and the jacket, backed up by photos.

Essential Britpop albums on vinyl

The golden age lasted only a few years, shaped by the Oasis versus Blur rivalry, which peaked in 1995 when "Roll With It" and "Country House" were released on the same day. Creation Records, which signed Oasis, and Food Records, where Blur started out, were the key labels. The albums that anchor a collection:

  • Oasis' "Definitely Maybe" (1994) and "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" (1995)
  • Blur's "Parklife" (1994)
  • Pulp's "Different Class" (1995)
  • Supergrass' "I Should Coco" (1995)
  • Suede's debut album (1993) and The Verve's "Urban Hymns" (1997)
