Leaving the Buzzcocks, a band he had founded, Howard Devoto quickly formed Magazine, with Barry Adamson on keyboards (who has since become famous for his film scores) and John McGeoch on guitar (later of Siouxsie & The Banshees), among others. He even brought with him a song previously composed for the Buzzcocks with Pete Shelley, Magazine's famous first single, the excellent "Shot By Both Sides." It appears on this debut album, which single-handedly invents post-punk: the energy and guitars are still present, but the music, which becomes more refined and futuristic, gives pride of place to synthesizers and takes inspiration from Bowie, Roxy Music, and Can's krautrock (much to our delight). A brilliant and innovative record.
