Real Life

Description

Leaving the Buzzcocks, which he had founded, Howard Devoto quickly formed Magazine, with Barry Adamson on keyboards (who has since become famous for his film scores) and John McGeoch on guitar (future Siouxie & The Banshees). He even brought with him a track previously composed for the Buzzcocks with Pete Shelley, Magazine's famous first single, the excellent "Shot By Both Sides." It's featured on this first album, which single-handedly invented post-punk: the energy and guitars are still present, but the music, which becomes more refined and futuristic, gives pride of place to synthesizers and recalls Bowie, Roxy Music, and the krautrock of Can (to our great delight). A brilliant and innovative album.
