Signed to Island Records, his Iggy Pop/Jim Morrison side was cultivated, the strangeness toned down, the leathers worn, and a rock'n'roll microphone stand was used. The title track "World Shut Your Mouth" gave Cope his first solo hit in the UK Top 20, a big cheeky slice of garage rock, it was a post-punk equivalent to David Bowie's comeback with Let's Dance; simple, direct. Supported by what Cope called his "two-car garage band," the album reached number 11 on the UK charts, his highest position to date, whether solo or with The Teardrop Explodes, and it also entered the American Billboard Hot 200. It is not a direct stomp, the last eight-minute track "A Crack In The Clouds" recalls the Wilder of The Teardrop Explodes, and the oboe of Kate St. John on the title track evokes his Mercury albums. Released in March 1987, Saint Julian was seen as a stunning return to form for Julian Cope - This reissue faithfully reproduces the original 1987 Mercury Records UK version and is pressed on high-quality 180g vinyl.
