My Nation Underground

Description

Saint Julian had established Julian Cope as a sort of anti-hero of the establishment, and the public, who recognized him, expected more of the same. Instead, Cope changes the lineup of his band and attempts to blend funk and krautrock in his new material. Chris Blackwell paired him with veteran American producer Ron Fair. The album produced three singles, including "Charlotte Anne," which was a minor hit in the United States. The opening track of the album, "5 O'Clock World," a cover of a 1965 song by the Vogues, is light and pop, and the seven-minute title track, featuring strings and a harmonica solo, is one of the greatest (and perhaps the only) attempts to merge go-go rhythms with post-punk. There is much to appreciate on My Nation Underground, highlighting Julian Cope's desire to continually push boundaries. My Nation Underground is an album ripe for rediscovery - This reissue faithfully reproduces the original 1988 Mercury Records UK version and is pressed on high-quality 180g vinyl.
