Released in March 1961, 'My Favorite Things' is the first album on which John Coltrane plays soprano saxophone in addition to his usual tenor. His soprano sax dominates two of the album’s four tracks, including his unforgettable cover of the title track written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the musical The Sound of Music. An edited version taken from the original 14-minute track became a radio hit in the spring. This success helped broaden Coltrane’s audience, and the album would go on to inspire several generations of fans. In tribute to the artistic and historical impact of this album, 'My Favorite Things' was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 and certified gold in 2018.
