This recording is undoubtedly one of the jewels of jazz history: the John Coltrane Quartet, with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones, and the participation of Eric Dolphy. John Coltrane's quartet is at its peak here, Elvin Jones confirming once again his status as one of the greatest percussionists of all time. The program of this memorable evening in February 1962, broadcast on Symphony Sid's radio show (a longtime American jazz host), included three long pieces: "Mr. PC", "Miles' Mode" (aka "Red Planet") and a nearly 20-minute interpretation of "My Favorite Things", which Coltrane always played in extended improvisation.
