Composed in a context of inevitable confinement, *A Superior Athlete*, the second album from Parisian quartet Hoorsees, celebrates afternoons spent re-watching classic entertainment cinema, from *Weekend at Bernie’s* to *Ferris Bueller’s Day Off*, right up to *Rush Hour 3*. With phlegmatism as its recurring theme, this new album explores the relationship between athletic fantasy and the apathy of domestic life. The lyrics rekindle, in technicolor, images of an existence lived at the pace of banal daily life punctuated by illusions — the kind we learn from movies. Alex Delamard's voice, invoking the ghost of Randy Newman and his natural nonchalance, carries pop melodies that resonate like derisory anthems, like a fan’s chant in an entirely empty stadium. This album, produced by the band themselves high in the mountains, offers a postmodern melting pot of what nourishes the band's identity. The tracks alternate and respond to each other, forming the backdrop of an apartment lit by the glow of a television endlessly flipping channels to the sound of Jonathan Richman, Pavement, or Weezer’s *Blue Album*. Building on the foundations of their first album, Hoorsees recounts the strange spectacle of everyday life and scores their most memorable touchdown yet.
