In recent years, Ghost Woman has been Evan Uschenko’s songwriting and recording outlet, one that began after years spent as a sideman in various Canadian indie outfits, most notably in Michael Rault’s band, a band that displays a similar affinity for perfectly calibrated, partially retro guitar pop. Following 2022’s acclaimed self-titled debut, the new album - Anne, If - presents a slightly more expansive vision of what Ghost Woman can be. The album’s sound is in line with past output: the music was performed and recorded (almost) entirely by Uschenko himself on his trusty Tascam 388 8-track, during what he describes as a “strange new chapter” in his life, living in a big, rambling house with nothing to do but record music, watch old VHS films, and cook meals over an open fire in the backyard. The results are excellent; Uschenko manages to cover more stylistic ground than ever while maintaining a solid throughline from beginning to end.
