Fenne Lily was born in London and moved to Dorset when she was very young, growing up in the most picturesque of English countrysides. She describes herself as a child raised outdoors, after her parents withdrew her from school when she was seven. The following year, she was educated on the bus that her family was traveling in across Europe. Even after returning to traditional school at the age of 9, her homeschooling didn't really stop, even expanding into music. Her mother gave her her old record collection, which allowed Fenne to discover and fall in love with T-Rex and the Velvet Underground & Nico. She then became passionate about the strange genius of PJ Harvey and was influenced by Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, and the world of Feist, artists who encouraged Fenne to pick up a guitar herself. On Hold, a tender collection of sincere, free, and open-hearted songs, was Fenne's first songwriting experience as a teenager. Writing her own songs was initially a therapeutic exercise for her, as she was very reserved when it came to expressing her feelings. The album, self-produced in 2018, organically found a wide online audience, which grew even more after she opened for the tours of Lucy Dacus and Andy Shauf. It is a new and extraordinary voice, capable of great depth and true resonance. Dead Oceans is reissuing this debut album, which has been out of print and hard to find since its release.
