Isolation is not a new experience for English artist Fenne Lily, who began making music after falling in love with PJ Harvey, Nick Drake, and Joni Mitchell — she even wrote an album on this subject during a period of voluntary isolation before the virus became as widespread as we know it: Breach, her first album to be released on Dead Oceans. Breach is like an expansive, often sardonic journal that deals with the chaos that comes with entering your twenties and finding peace, alone. The album's title came to her during long conversations with her mother about her birth. The dual nature of the word — which, when spelled with an "A," means "to pierce" — intrigued her. "That's what I'm doing on this record; I'm piercing a wall that I've built myself and confronting these feelings of loneliness and isolation. I realized that I'm comfortable with myself, and that I don't need to fixate on relationships to feel like I have something to say." Even though it also carries implications of awkwardness, rebellion, and breakups, it is a word with a broader scope: new beginnings and rebirths.
