With this opera, the Staatskapelle Dresden plays in its family tree! While Wagner's time in Dresden is well known to biographers, the links between the legendary Saxon orchestra and this work are close: as early as 1938, the ensemble recorded, under the baton of Karl Böhm, the first world recording (it should be noted that The Mastersingers of Nuremberg were widely used by Nazi propaganda) while the recording from 1970 under the direction of Herbert von Karajan (Warner) remains one of the great references in the work!
