Few concerts in the world are awaited with as much enthusiasm as the New Year's Concert in Vienna. Under the direction of Christian Thielemann, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra ushers in the new year with a concert in the magnificent Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. After 2019, the January 1st concert marks the second time Christian Thielemann has conducted this prestigious event. This year's program includes a total of 9 premieres for the New Year's Concert, among them music from the Strauss family and their contemporaries. For the first time, music by Anton Bruckner will be featured on the program, in tribute to the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth in 2024. The annual New Year's Concert in Vienna has been a major event for more than eight decades, that is, since 1939. It is broadcast on television and radio and reaches millions of viewers in over 90 countries around the world. The concert has already been conducted by world-renowned maestros such as Herbert von Karajan, Lorin Maazel, Claudio Abbado, Carlos Kleiber, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Seiji Ozawa, Mariss Jansons, Franz Welser-Möst, Gustavo Dudamel, and many others. As musical ambassadors of Austria, the Wiener Philharmoniker extend New Year's wishes to people around the world in a spirit of hope, friendship, and peace, through lively and light, but also nostalgic and profound music, drawn from the vast repertoire of the Johann Strauss family and their contemporaries.
