Spotted by Radio Nova on the occasion of the release of their first album Start Fresh, the Paris collective Chlorine Free is the spearhead of the new electro jazz funk scene. At first glance, one quickly thinks of the mythical Headhunters, Herbie Hancock’s legendary funk band. But stopping at this comparison would be a serious mistake, because the septet has made a point of digesting both the golden age of hip-hop (A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul...), Nu Soul (D'Angelo, Galliano) and experimental electro (Squarepusher, a reference claimed by Virgile Lorach, the band’s leader). “Le Fish”, their new album, is a reflection of this heritage. If the band pays its debt to the greats, it is to better free itself from them. There are various gems straight out of the golden age of funk-jazz, hallucinogenic electro interludes, and the live hip-hop that made the band famous on their first album.
