Spotted by Radio Nova on the occasion of the release of their first album "Start Fresh," the Parisian collective Chlorine Free is at the forefront of the new funk jazz electro scene. Right from the start, one quickly thinks of the legendary Headhunters, Herbie Hancock's iconic funk group. But stopping at this comparison would be a serious mistake, as the septet has made a point of digesting both the golden age of hip-hop (A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul) and Nu Soul (D'Angelo, Galliano) as well as experimental electro (Squarepusher, a claimed reference by Virgile Lorach, the group's leader). Chlorine Free is back with a new 5-track E.P, Flexible. Following the successes of Start Fresh (2012) and Le Fish (2014), the group continues in the same vein with their brass-infused jazz-funk tinged with electronics and even hip-hop. While "Tuesday," "Around Sixteen," and "Bass Beam" operate within a relatively classic yet incredibly effective jazz-funk, "Junggling" with its square breakbeat and the effective flow of its MC offers a track with strongly hip-hop undertones. As for "Flexible," the album's wild track, it once again references the world of Squarepusher and Warp Records.
