Recorded with the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Krzysztof Penderecki, Beth Gibbons performs the 3rd Symphony by Henryk Górecki, known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. An elusive yet iconic singer of one of the most important British groups of the last two decades, Beth Gibbons delivers a striking and sensational performance alongside maestro Penderecki. Beth Gibbons is the singer, songwriter, producer, and co-founder (with Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley) of the group Portishead as well as a solo artist. This album is Beth Gibbons' first recording since 2008. Henryk Górecki (1933 - 2010) was a Polish composer of contemporary classical music, regarded as the classical composer who achieved the greatest commercial success in recent decades. His first work, the Third Symphony, known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, sold over a million copies. Krzysztof Penderecki has been hailed as the greatest living composer and conductor in Poland. His music reached a wider audience through films such as The Shining and The Exorcist.
