BASIC, the trio composed of Chris Forsyth (guitar), Mikel Patrick Avery (percussion, drum machines, electronics) and Douglas McCombs (Fender Bass VI), recorded their new seven-track album in two days at Electrical Audio studios in Chicago. Overdubs and mixing were finalized with Jeff Zeigler in Philadelphia. The recordings, decidedly groovy, offer a sound that is both light and relaxed, giving the tracks a surprising breadth for a trio. The richness of detail comes from the intertwining of guitars and Avery's unique style, which blends electronic rhythms and live acoustic percussion through various electronic processors he designed himself. Shortly after the release of their first album (This Is BASIC, 2024), bassist McCombs (Tortoise, Brokeback) joined the group. Accompanied by founding members from Philadelphia, Forsyth (Solar Motel Band) and Avery (Natural Information Society), they toured the American West Coast, the Northeast, and the Midwest, notably participating in reference festivals like Sound & Gravity and Big Ears. The chemistry between the three musicians allowed them to compose new tracks almost immediately, and the EP Dream City was released in spring 2025.
