Sepultura is a Brazilian heavy metal band founded in 1984 in Belo Horizonte by brothers Max (guitar, vocals) and Igor Cavalera (drums), alongside Paulo Jr. on bass and guitarist Andreas Kisser who joined in 1987. Their early sound mixed thrash and death metal, shaped by underground tape trading and regional scenes. Landmark albums like "Beneath the Remains" (1989) and "Arise" (1991) established their global reputation.
They incorporated tribal percussion and tribal musical elements notably on "Roots" (1996), recorded partly with Xavante Indians in the Amazon. Following Max Cavalera's departure in 1996, Derrick Green became vocalist, ushering a new era with albums like "Against" (1998) and "Nation" (2001).
