Born from the fusion of gospel, rhythm & blues, and doo-wop, soul music took flight at the dawn of the 1960s. Ray Charles laid the cornerstone with 'What'd I Say' (1959); Sam Cooke gave it political weight with 'A Change Is Gonna Come' (1964). Then came the Motown tidal wave: the 'made in Detroit' sound delivered classic after classic, Marvin Gaye ('What's Going On', 1971), Stevie Wonder ('Innervisions', 1973), The Temptations ('Cloud Nine', 1969), and The Supremes.
