Gregory Porter is back, but you probably already knew that. He returns with a sixth studio album, All Rise, which marks a return to the original compositions Porter loves—lyrics with raw emotions, imbued with an ordinary philosophy, and with the detail of a lived reality.
These songs are blended into an exciting mix: jazz and soul, blues and gospel. Produced by Troy Miller (Laura Mvula, Jamie Cullum, Emili Sandé), All Rise also represents Porter's artistic evolution: his art has become even more assertive, more emotional. It's more intimate, and more universal too. After Nat King Cole & Me in 2017, Porter was sure of two things: first, that he would bring in an orchestra for the next album (checked that box), and second, that music is medicine. Armed with this latter revelation, All Rise is brimming with songs that speak of irrepressible love. With a little extra protest, because the road to healing is bumpy.
