With Ornithology, The Diasonics make a return that is as bold as it is captivating, continuing the trajectory begun with their acclaimed debut album Origin of Forms (2022). This second release on Record Kicks continues to explore their signature sound: cinematic funk with oriental touches, infused with analogue soul and a rare instrumental hip-hop sensibility. Recorded at Studio 23 – their DIY haunt located in a former Soviet factory – Ornithology is a dense and textured record, built around an unexpected central theme: birds. Inspired by the real cries of birds flying over their studio, as well as local toponymy, the railway soundscape, and the poetry of movement, the album's tracks bear titles such as "Mockingbird," "Guineafowl," or "Chickadee." A tribute to flight, space, and freedom — as much as a musical manifesto. In terms of sound, the band pushes its experimentation even further: vintage synthesizers, stripped-down grooves, and subtle textural interplay intertwine with Diana Greb's ethereal voice, integrated as an instrument in its own right. The result: an album that floats between earth and sky, rooted in 70s funk grooves yet open to more abstract, sometimes almost mystical dimensions.
