French Rap / Hip Hop

French-speaking Rap and Hip Hop have developed a strong identity since the late 80s. From IAM and NTM to MC Solaar and Oxmo Puccino, pioneers laid the foundations of a style that is at once poetic, protest-driven, and deeply rooted in social reality.

Since then, subsequent generations have broadened the spectrum: Booba, Rohff, La Fouine, and Diam’s left their mark on the 2000s, while today, a new scene represented by PNL, Orelsan, SCH, and Nekfeu continues to redefine the codes.

Each vinyl record embodies a stage in this rich musical history, encompassing demands, storytelling, and sound experiments. Let's relive the evolution of a genre that gave hip hop a unique flavor, carried by the French language and its many accents.

French Rap Vinyl: Classic French Hip Hop Albums and Reissues

What is French rap, and why collect it on vinyl?

French rap vinyl opens the door to one of the most active hip hop scenes outside the United States. Rap in French took off in the early '90s, with its own flows, its own production styles and lyrics rooted in the French suburbs, the banlieues. It also includes artists from Belgium, Switzerland and French-speaking Africa. For years it sold mostly on CD, so many classics were pressed on vinyl in tiny quantities, if at all. Today reissues are catching up, and most major new albums also get an LP release.

This page gathers the French-language rap and hip hop records listed on Vinyles.com, from Suprême NTM to Booba, Kery James, 113, Sexion d'Assaut, Soprano and La Fouine. For each record, you can compare offers from several partner stores.

Originals, reissues and limited editions

Period vinyl pressings of '90s and 2000s French rap classics are hard to find and can be pricey, precisely because so few were made. For listening, an official reissue is the better buy: cheaper, and brand new. Recent albums often come in several versions, black vinyl, color variants, box sets or signed copies, some exclusive to a single store, so prices vary widely.

  • Check whether it's a period pressing or a reissue
  • Favor a double LP for albums over an hour long
  • Be wary of unofficial pressings sold at rock-bottom prices

Essential French rap albums on vinyl

French rap broke through with MC Solaar's "Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo" (1991). The late '90s delivered the classics: IAM's "L'École du micro d'argent" (1997), Suprême NTM's self-titled "Suprême NTM" (1998), Oxmo Puccino's "Opéra Puccino" (1998), 113's "Les Princes de la ville" (1999) and Lunatic's "Mauvais œil" (2000), released on 45 Scientific. Booba followed with "Temps mort" (2002), while Kery James and Rockin' Squat carried a more political voice. A newer generation put vinyl back at the center, with Nekfeu's "Feu" (2015), PNL's "Dans la légende" (2016) and Orelsan's "La fête est finie" (2017) all of which are available on LP.

How to follow French rap releases and reissues

Anniversary reissues of '90s classics are the best chance to find those albums on vinyl at a sensible price, often as limited editions. Current French rappers usually announce vinyl editions as pre-orders, with variants that sell out quickly. The artist links and new-release tags above help you keep track. Comparing offers across several stores keeps you from overpaying for a limited pressing.
