Disco on vinyl: dancefloor fever etched into the groove
The roots of disco: Funk, Philly Soul, and the dawn of club culture
Born in the underground clubs of early 1970s New York, David Mancuso's Loft, Nicky Siano's Gallery, and later the iconic Studio 54, disco draws its roots from James Brown's syncopated funk, the lush orchestrations of Philly Soul (courtesy of Gamble & Huff's Philadelphia International Records), and the hypnotic grooves of the early 70s soul scene. By 1974, with George McCrae's 'Rock Your Baby' and Van McCoy's 'The Hustle,' the genre had established its signature 120 BPM tempo and galloping basslines. Vinyl was its original medium: DJs mixed on 33⅓ RPM LPs, and the 12-inch single, a true disco innovation, propelled the genre to its commercial zenith between 1977 and 1980.
Legendary labels, 12-inch singles, and essential albums
You can't talk disco without Casablanca Records, home to Donna Summer, the undisputed queen whose 'I Feel Love' (1977, produced by Giorgio Moroder) revolutionised electronic music as a whole, as well as Village People and the landmark 'Bad Girls' album. On the opposite coast, New York's Salsoul Records embodies the orchestral soul of disco with the Salsoul Orchestra, Loleatta Holloway, and First Choice. West End Records (Karen Young, Taana Gardner) and Prelude (D-Train, Sharon Redd) extended the fever into post-disco and boogie territory. Let's also mention Chic and their 'Risqué' album sculpted by Nile Rodgers, French drummer Cerrone's 'Cerrone IV', whose original Malligator pressings are avidly hunted by collectors, and the quintessential 'Saturday Night Fever' soundtrack. To help you navigate the wealth of available editions, a price comparison service like Vinyles.com gathers listings from multiple retailers, allowing you to compare options before committing to your perfect record.
