60s Pop Vinyl: The Beatles, Beach Boys, Kinks and the Mono Question

1960s pop on vinyl: what this collection covers

This page gathers 60s pop vinyl: the British Invasion, California pop, folk rock, pop soul and the great voices of the decade. The catalog runs from The Beatles to The Beach Boys, The Kinks, The Byrds, The Hollies, The Lovin' Spoonful, Manfred Mann, Them, Dusty Springfield and The Doors, along with Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. Each record page lists offers from several partner stores, so you can compare a recent reissue, a mono edition or a box set before clicking through to the store.

Mono or stereo, original or reissue: buying 60s pop records

This is the key question for the decade. Until the late 1960s, mono was the main format, especially in the UK: artists and producers focused on the mono mix, while the stereo version was often done quickly. For many albums, mono is the definitive version. The Beatles got two remastered vinyl box sets, in stereo in 2012 and in mono in 2014, and Sundazed has specialized in mono reissues of 1960s pop and rock.

Original UK and US pressings are sought after but often worn. A careful reissue in clean condition is the safer choice for listening, as long as you check which mix it uses. Also watch out for period "electronically reprocessed" fake stereo, which is no match for a genuine mono or stereo mix.

Essential 60s pop albums on LP

The year 1966 alone brought The Beatles' "Revolver" and The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds". A year earlier, The Byrds launched folk rock with "Mr. Tambourine Man" (1965). The Doors released their debut in 1967, the year of The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". In 1968 The Kinks made "The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society", and Dusty Springfield released "Dusty in Memphis" in 1969. France had its own 60s pop, called yé-yé, led by Françoise Hardy and Jacques Dutronc.

Singles, EPs and compilations: exploring the decade

In the 1960s, many hits came out first as 45s, and some never appeared on the original albums. Compilations and greatest hits collections are the easiest way to gather the singles of bands such as The Hollies or Manfred Mann on one record. To branch out, the Pop collection leads to French pop, international pop and international retro pop, and artist pages bring together every available release.

Frequently asked questions

Mono or stereo: which is better for 60s pop vinyl?

For most albums released before 1968, mono is the mix artists worked on most, especially in the UK. Period stereo mixes sometimes split vocals and instruments in odd ways. Ideally, hear both, but mono is often the reference choice for The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Kinks.

What are the best 60s pop albums to buy on vinyl?

A solid foundation: The Beatles' "Revolver" and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds", The Byrds' "Mr. Tambourine Man", The Doors' debut, The Kinks' "The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society" and Dusty Springfield's "Dusty in Memphis".

Are original 1960s pressings worth it?

For collectors, yes, but they are often expensive and rarely in perfect shape after sixty years. For listening, a careful reissue, in mono if the album was made that way, gives you a clean sound for much less. If you buy an original, check the country of pressing, the grading and photos of the disc.

Why are some 60s hits missing from the albums?

In the 1960s, singles and albums were often treated separately, and many hits were released only as 45s, especially in the UK. US and UK editions of the same album also had different track lists. That is why compilations and greatest hits records are useful for gathering an artist's singles.
