Liars’ career has ventured into every genre precisely so as not to fit any label: abrasive yet erudite punk-funk, marginal no-wave, ecstatic noise-pop, 21st-century garage rock, post-millennial post-rock, delicate electro... On this seventh album, the self-analytical and introspective aspect has given way to exuberant immediacy. Whereas WIXIW reflected a band in a somewhat altered state, fragile and ambiguous, Mess is an album on which Liars speak from the gut - a kind of primal, enraged and delirious electronic explosion that sacrifices self-torment in favor of a powerful and salutary release.
