What age can a child start using a record player?

There is no set age, but younger kids mostly listen with an adult handling the record and tonearm. Around five or six, many children learn to hold a record by its edges and start a side themselves, with a little guidance at first.

What is a read-along record?

A read-along record comes with an illustrated book, and the disc narrates the story or plays the songs. Kids turn the pages as they listen. The format was hugely popular for decades and remains a playful way to discover music and stories.

Are picture discs a good choice for kids?

Yes. They play on any turntable and kids love the artwork. They are often slightly noisier than standard black vinyl, which rarely matters for nursery rhymes or soundtracks. They scratch just as easily as a regular record, so the same handling rules apply.

What vinyl records make good gifts for kids?

Songs and nursery rhymes for toddlers, stories or read-along records from about age four or five, and animated film soundtracks for all ages. A record a child already knows, like the soundtrack to a favorite movie, is often a great place to start.

Kids Vinyl Records: New Children's Music, Soundtracks and Story Records

New kids vinyl on this page

This page gathers new kids vinyl records tracked on Vinyles.com: songs and nursery rhymes, stories, animated film soundtracks and music made for young listeners. The selection is still small and changes as new records come out. For each record you can compare offers from several partner stores and see which editions are available.

Vinyl and children go back a long way. Read-along records, which pair a picture book with a disc, were a staple for generations of young listeners. French families still treasure classics like Anne Sylvestre's "Fabulettes", a well-loved series of songs for kids, proof that a good children's record can be passed down from parents to their own kids.

Which vinyl records for toddlers and older kids?

For toddlers and preschoolers, nursery rhymes and short songs work better than long tracks. From around four or five, narrated stories and read-along records let kids follow a plot while looking at pictures. Animated film soundtracks, often released by Walt Disney Records, appeal to all ages, as do albums by artists who write for children without talking down to them.

Toddlers: nursery rhymes, lullabies, short songs
Ages 4-5 and up: stories and read-along records
All ages: animated film soundtracks
Whole family: children's song albums

Practical tips for kids and records

Vinyl scratches easily, so teach kids to hold a record by its edges and to lower the tonearm with an adult's help at first. As for turntables, very cheap models with a heavy-tracking arm can wear records faster; a simple but properly set-up turntable will treat them better. Picture discs, with an image pressed into the vinyl, are a big hit with kids, but they are often a little noisier than black vinyl.

A clean inner sleeve and vertical storage go a long way toward keeping much-played records in good shape. A quick pass with an anti-static brush before playing limits dust, the main cause of crackle. Keep records away from radiators and sunny windows too: heat can warp vinyl surprisingly fast, and a warped record quickly becomes unplayable.

Comparing prices on children's vinyl

The price of the same kids record varies with the edition, format and store. A read-along set, picture disc or color edition usually costs more than a standard black pressing. On Vinyles.com, each record page groups offers from partner stores, so you can quickly find the best deal, whether for a birthday or a holiday gift, and see which editions are currently in stock.
