Symphonie n° 7, op. 92 - Vinyle
François-Xavier Roth

New classical music releases on vinyl fall into two groups. There are fresh recordings by today’s performers, such as cellist Camille Thomas and pianists Anne Queffélec, Lucas Debargue and Katia Labèque. And there are reissues of landmark analog-era recordings, with conductors like Herbert von Karajan and Bruno Walter. Reissues make up a large share of classical vinyl records, since stereo recordings from the 1950s through the 1970s translate especially well to the LP.
With classical vinyl, the quality of the reissue matters as much as the performance. The big labels, Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, Sony Classical and Warner Classics, all reissue their catalogs, and Deutsche Grammophon runs The Original Source series, cut from the analog tapes. Audiophile reissue labels such as Speakers Corner and Analogue Productions also carry classical titles. For new recordings, labels such as Harmonia Mundi release part of their output on vinyl, often as limited editions.
Classical vinyl moves at a slower pace than pop: labels release on CD and digital first, and only some new albums make it to LP. Releases land on Fridays, as in other genres. Composer and performer anniversaries often bring reissues and box sets, while audiophile series announce titles in waves. This page gathers new classical albums as they show up at partner stores, so it's a good place to check what came out this month.
Neoclassical and contemporary music is the exception: albums from composers like Max Richter on Deutsche Grammophon come out on vinyl very regularly on release day. For the core repertoire, keep an eye on reissue series and anniversary box sets instead, which add new titles every year.
Price gaps can be wide, especially between a standard reissue and an audiophile edition of the same recording. Here you can compare offers from several partner stores for each record, then click through to the one you want. For box sets, work out the price per disc, since a complete-works box often costs less per LP than buying volumes one by one. For a specific piece, compare performances as well: the conductor or soloist shapes what you hear more than the pressing does.
