Funk and soul vinyl pre-orders are mainly about locking in a record with a limited run. Many retro-soul and funk labels press small quantities, sometimes with a color variant reserved for pre-orders, and don't always repress. Making a record often takes months, which is why albums get announced so far ahead. The upcoming records listed here range from current R&B by Jacquees and Blxst to the instrumental funk of Karate Boogaloo and Calibro 35, Brazilian soul from Ed Motta and French singer Thomas Kahn.
Pre-ordering also lets you pick your version while it's still available: a double LP with bonus tracks, a store-exclusive color, a signed copy. For disco 12-inches and 45s from small labels, often pressed in tiny numbers, a pre-order is sometimes the only way to get the record new.
Pre-orders come with some uncertainty. Vinyl release dates can slip, sometimes by weeks, because of busy pressing plants or a problem with the first test pressings. Terms also vary by store: some charge when you order, others when they ship. Read the store's terms before confirming, especially about cancellations.
Also watch which version is actually on offer. The same pre-order can mean black vinyl at one store and a color variant at another, at different prices. Keep your order confirmation and the announced date so you can follow up with the store if the record hasn't shipped after the official release, and double-check the shipping address before the date arrives.
Specialist labels announce releases weeks or months ahead and open pre-orders right away. Daptone Records, Big Crown Records and Colemine Records for retro soul, Record Kicks for European funk and soul, and Numero Group, Soul Jazz Records and Mr Bongo for reissues: following them is the best way to see the most sought-after records coming. Anniversary reissues of classics, such as Stax titles from Craft Recordings, often go through a pre-order phase too.
Pre-order prices can differ from store to store, and so can the version on offer. On this page you can compare offers from several partner stores for each upcoming record, then click through to the one you want. If you're after a limited color variant, check which store carries it. For standard black vinyl there's no need to pre-order: it usually stays available after release, and prices can shift then.
