What exactly is Folk Soul? Not the roots-rock or contemporary country ballads you are probably used to. Folk Soul sits just before, if not directly alongside, the diaspora of Black music from the mid-60s to the early 70s. While Spiritual Soul channeled the ethos of Black liberation and the broader struggles of its time, Folk Soul thrived on dissection, classification, and a straightforward rejection of the status quo, confronting the complex and rigid power struggles of the era through minimalist, classically trained, and avant-garde approaches to songwriting. This LP Kills Fascists.
