In 18th-century Venice, the party never stops! Carnival can last up to eight months a year. In La Serenissima, everything becomes mask, metamorphosis, and illusion. Sottosopra! – “upside down” – evokes that upside-down world that was Baroque Venice: a city where the mask erases hierarchies, where carnival suspends the rules, where music becomes both mirror and vertigo. Around Ophélie Gaillard’s cello and the voices of countertenor Zoltan Darago and tenor Zachary Wilder, this program brings together major works from the Vivaldi repertoire, but above all delightful rarities that reflect a spirit of discovery, effervescence, and celebration. An unpublished cantata by Giovanni Finazzi, a castrato and emblematic composer of the art of disguise in Baroque Venice, completes this album.
