When asked to describe himself, Whitmer Thomas, musician, skater, and closet Blink-182 fan, will tell you: "I will always be the one his mother called 'the Golden One' just before she died." This is where we find Whitmer, thirty years old, in his first comedy special on HBO, The Golden One, which explores this sense (curse?) of destiny as identity. Songs from The Golden One, an album that accompanies the series' songs, features Whitmer's darkwave bangers, synthesizing content that resonates: millennial anxieties, jokes about therapeutic language, and the annals of his own childhood tragedies. Thomas uses the nasal, gothic drone as a comedic detachment tool to cover the "funny because it's true" aspect of awkward sexual adventures, paralyzing insecurity, shame, ambition, and the long line of abandonment traumas. Each song is a capsule of early therapeutic breakthroughs. Whitmer will say he made The Golden One out of despair, but there is something that feels much more like destiny.
