Description

Weather Report was one of the most influential jazz-fusion groups of its time, outlasting many of its contemporaries such as Herbie Hancock's Headhunters and The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Despite numerous personnel changes over its 16-year existence, they continued to create revolutionary music under the leadership of Joe Zawinul. Sweetnighter from 1973 marks a new approach to music, more focused on groove, and signifies the end of the first phase of Weather Report, being the last album on which Miroslav Vitous played bass. Zawinul explored the boundaries of funk, relying more heavily than ever on his Rhodes (which was sometimes enhanced with a wah wah) while Shorter refined his craft and created a more concentrated sound.
